ANNUAL GORDY SHIELDS MEMORIAL RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Join us to honor and celebrate the life of Gordy Shields who worked endlessly on behalf of the Bayshore Bikeway and cycling advocacy in our community. Ride with San Diego County Bicycle Coalition riders (joint ride with SDBC, SD Cyclo-Vets, and other interested cyclists). Meet at 8:15 am at Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Avenue near the Gordy Shields bridge in National City and be ready to roll at 8:30 am. Meet at 8:30 am in the De Anza Cove parking lot of Mission Bay Park for a 41 mi ride to Coronado island. We’ll make a brief stop at Chicano Park which was recently named a National Historic Landmark for its murals, then continue onto the Bayshore Bikeway and Silver Strand. Meet at 8:30 am at the Carmel Valley Park and Ride under the 5/56 freeway interchange. We’ll head inland to explore neighborhood communities of Carmel Valley, Sabre Springs, Poway and more along the 56 bike path. Our destination will be the Rancho Bernardo winery for this ~45 mi ride of moderate hills and a peppy pace. April 13 – THURSDAY
CARLSBAD INLAND RIDE TO CRAFTSMANSHIP MUSEUM
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
This ride involves rolling hills as we bike east on Cannon Rd and Faraday Ave to the Craftsmanship Museum. The ride meets at the Carlsbad Poinsettia Amtrak train station at 10:30 am. Most participants will take the #639 Coaster north from the Sorrento Valley station which departs at 10:09 am (plan to arrive by 9:50 am). Bring money for lunch and the Coaster fare (senior, $2.50 one way, others $5.00). Bring snacks; food is not available at the museum. From the museum we bike west to the coast to the area of the Poinsettia station where we will break for snacks or lunch. We will then bike along the coast to the Sorrento Valley station parking area for a total of 32 mi. Some may choose to sign-out early to take the southbound Coaster #688 scheduled at 2:10 pm from the Poinsettia station. Leader: Allen Ramrus, 858-245-1643.

TIJUANA ESTUARY LOOP

From downtown San Diego, let’s head to Coronado via Gordy Shields Bridge and The Strand, visiting Tijuana Estuary Nature Preserve en route. We’ll also trace the Bayshore Bike Path through the wetlands and past the salt flats. Expect 28 easy miles. Snack at a pier-side cafΘ in Imperial Beach. Head home at your leisure via the Coronado ferry ($4.75 with bike). Meet at 9:00 am on North Harbor Drive in front of the San Diego County Administration Building (1600 Pacific Highway between Ash & Cedar). Free Sunday parking on North Harbor Drive. This relatively flat 25 mi ride starts at 10:50 am track-side of the Coaster at the Oceanside Transit Center and ends at the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station at around 1:30 pm. Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking) arriving at about 9:50 am to provide enough time to take Coaster #639 north-bound at 10:09 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:43 am. Meet at 8:45 am in front of the Admin Bldg of the Lawrence Welk Resort (8860 Lawrence Welk Dr off Champagne Blvd, 10 mi N of Escondido. Note later start time. This ride is similar to the old standby Champagne express as a 40 – 45 mi scenic loop ride through north Escondido’s rolling hills over to Rainbow and return up Old Hwy 395. This ride starts with a 10 mi climb up Montezuma Grade (the longest sustained grade in S.D. County) and later has a 2 mi climb up the south side of Yaqui Pass. We’ll recoup from the first climb with a snack stop at the Ranchita fire house and prepare for the second climb with a water stop at Tamarisk Campground. SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO TO SORRENTO VALLEY

Just like the swallows we will return to the San Juan Capistrano Amtrak station at about 10:00 am for a 57 mi social ride along the coast arriving back at Sorrento Valley by 5 pm after 5 1/2 hours of riding, plus a lunch stop and breaks. Bring a photo ID for access to the Camp Pendleton and $$ for lunch. A good way to get to San Juan Capistrano is by the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #567 which leaves Sorrento Valley at 8:54 am. You MUST make an Amtrak RESERVATION for you AND your bike, only 7 bikes can be accommodated on each Surfliner. An earlier Surfliner leaves Solana Beach at 7:41 am. Difficulty Rating: up to 13 mi, basically flat, 10-12 mph average pace.This flat, 13 mi ride around Mission Bay passes by the Rose Creek Watershed, the Kendel-Frost Mission Bay Reserve, the Mission Bay Northern Wildlife Preserve, and Southern Wildlife Preserve along a portion of the San Diego River Estuary. A leisurely BREAKFAST is planned in the middle of the ride around 8:45 am. Almost all of the ride is on bike paths. LA JOLLA SHORES EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, steep grade(s), 12-14 mph average pace.Meet at 8:45 am at the Encinitas train station parking lot on Vulcan between D Street and Encinitas Blvd. This ride is a 42 mi route along the coast to La Jolla Shores. There will be three climbs: Torrey Pines Rd., La Jolla Shores Dr. and San Andreas Rd. We will have several regroups and two breaks at The Shore Thing in La Jolla and at the Ranch Market in Rancho Santa Fe. Route may be altered if there are high temperatures.
