Meet at 8:30 am in the Souplantation parking lot in Carmel Valley (3804 Valley Centre Dr, SD, 92130). Explore Carmel Valley into Rancho Santa Fe then loop around to the coast for our return route. Meet at 9 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive. This 25 mi ride through rolling hills takes us to San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center. On our return along the coast, we will stop at the Java Depot for coffee, then resume our southward travel along the coast through Del Mar to Carmel Valley and our starting point. There will be a challenging climb up Prefumo Canyon with views of Morro Rock and the Santa Lucia Mt Range. After the climb, we’ll continue to Morro Bay via Morro Bay State Park. STONE BREWERY EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, steep grade(s), 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:45 am at Stone Brewery in Escondido located at 1999 Citracado Pkwy. There is adequate parking in the rear of their lot near the entrance to the trailhead. This is a 39.5 mi route to the Welk Resort and nearby surrounding roads with some beautiful vistas; and one challenging climb on Circle R. There will be several regroups and a break by the Welk Resort. There is no planned food stop, however Stone Brewery at the end of the ride is a nice option. Leader: Cynthia Katz, 818-823-7099.

This relatively flat 25 mi ride starts at 10:55 am track-side of the Coaster at the Oceanside Transit Center and ends at the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station at around 1:30 pm. Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking) arriving at about 10:00 am to provide enough time to take Coaster #639 north-bound at 10:14 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:50 am. Meet at the Mission Bay Visitor Center at 9 am. This ride will start by biking south on East Mission Bay Drive and proceed to the Sea World Drive bike path and on to Perez Cove. We then take the bike path on Sunset Cliffs Ridge along the San Diego River to Robb Field for a bathroom break. We then proceed to the Fashion Valley Transit Center and take a coffee break at Starbucks off Camino De La Reina. We then bike to Hotel Circle Place and to Pacific Hwy north and return to the Mission Bay Visitor Center. This is a new leader evaluation ride. Evaluator: Carol Carr. ALPINE – PINE VALLEY LOOP JR EXPRESS

We will ride from Alpine to Pine Valley (3.5 mi on I-8). After a short loop in Pine Valley we will return to Alpine via Japatul Road which has great downhills, mountain vistas and very little traffic. Come prepared for hills on this 43 mi ride. Meet at 9:00 am near Starbuck’s in the Albertson’s supermarket parking lot near Alpine Bl & S. Grade Rd in Alpine. Exit I-8 at Tavern Rd, go S, turn left on Alpine Bl, go 1.6 mi. This flat, 13 mi ride around Mission Bay passes by the Rose Creek Watershed, the Kendel-Frost Mission Bay Reserve, the Mission Bay Northern Wildlife Preserve, and Southern Wildlife Preserve along a portion of the San Diego River Estuary. A lunch stop is planned in the middle of the ride. Brown bag it or bring $$ for lunch. Almost all of the ride is on bike paths. Sleep in and still meet at 11:00 am in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitor Center. We should get back to the starting point by 1:30 pm. There will be some climbing including Torrey Pines grade and La Jolla Shores on return, however the route will be moderately paced. We will have several regroups and a break in La Jolla. Similar to the old standby Champagne express is a 40 – 45 mi scenic loop ride through north Escondido’s rolling hills over to Rainbow and return up Old Hwy 395. We will ride from Alpine to Pine Valley, partially on hard-pack dirt Viejas Grade Road. After a short loop in Pine Valley we will return to Alpine via Japatul Road which has great downhills, mountain vistas and very little traffic. Come prepared for lots of hills on this 45 mi ride. Meet at 9:00 am near Starbuck’s in the Albertson’s supermarket parking lot near Alpine Bl & S. Grade Rd in Alpine. Exit I-8 at Tavern Rd, go S, turn left on Alpine Bl, go 1.6 mi. Aversion to dirt? Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking, contact me for details) arriving at about 10:00 am to provide enough time to take the #639 Coaster north-bound at 10:14 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:50 am. For a shorter ride you could hop on the Coaster at Solana Beach or Encinitas. Meet at 10:51 am track-side at the Oceanside Transit Center. Stop for lunch along the way. Just like the swallows we will return to the San Juan Capistrano Amtrak station at 10:00 am for a 57 mi social ride along the coast arriving back at Sorrento Valley by 5 pm after 5 1/2 hours of riding, plus a lunch stop and breaks, Bring a photo ID for access to the Camp Pendleton and $$ for lunch. A good way to get to San Juan Capistrano is by the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #567 which leaves Sorrento Valley at 8:50 am. You MUST make an Amtrak reservation for you AND for your bike, only 7 bikes can be accommodated on a Surfliner. An earlier Surfliner leaves Solana Beach at 7:41 am. Join me for a viewing of about 100 pumpkins carved by the monks at SwamiÆs, the Self-Realization Fellowship, as we cycle thru Encinitas. This relatively flat 25 mi ride starts at 10:55 am track-side at the Oceanside Transit Center and ends at the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station at around 2 pm. Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking) arriving at about 10:00 am to provide enough time to take Coaster #681 north-bound at 10:17 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:51 am. SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO TO SORRENTO VALLEY

Meet at the San Juan Capistrano Amtrak station at 10:00 am for a 56 mi social ride along the coast to Sorrento Valley. We should get back to Sorrento Valley by 5 pm after 5╜ hours of riding, plus a lunch stop and breaks, Bring a photo ID for access to the Camp Pendleton and $$ for lunch. A good way to get to San Juan Capistrano is by the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #567 which leaves Sorrento Valley at 8:50 am. You could also board the train at a station north of Sorrento Valley. You MUST make an Amtrak reservation for you and your bike, only 7 bikes can be accommodated on the Surfliner. Alternative transportation may be via the Coaster and MetroLink. This 49 mi route starts out heading south along the coast towards the 56 bike path, riding through Carmel Valley, 4S Ranch, RSF, Olivenhain, and Leucadia with a coastal return. It’s a scenic ride with lots of rolling hills and a couple exhilarating downhills. There will be regroups, a break at Ranch Market in Rancho Santa Fe, and a possible additional break as needed.
