Bicycle Section of the Sierra Club Ride Calendar

This is a partial listing of our outings. The complete list along with our trips and social events is available to all members. See Membership Form. All outings listed are free of charge and open to public participation unless otherwise noted. If weather is questionable, contact the leader.

REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDES: Helmet, water, spare tube, pump and patch kit.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.


Ride List for December 2019

December 1 – SUNDAY
ROUTE 56 JUNIOR EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, rolling hills, 14-16 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:45 am at DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay Park for a 43 mi Junior Express ride up coast, then east on Route 56 bike path, and back along Black Mtn. Rd. There will be a snack stop. Rain cancels. December 1 – SUNDAY
MOSAIC GARDEN RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Let’s combine our Sunday ride with a visit to Lois’ Mosaic Garden. Meet at 9:00 am and we’ll head to Mira Mesa from our regular meeting place, Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Dr. across from the Del Mar shopping center. After a snack stop in Mira Mesa we’ll stop by Lois’ home to appreciate her unique Mosaic garden on our way back to our cars. Come for the social pace of this ride. Rain cancels. December 3 – TUESDAY
TACO TUESDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
This relatively flat 25 mi ride starts at 10:30 am track-side of the Coaster at the Oceanside Transit Center and ends at the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station at around 1:45 pm. Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking) arriving at about 9:30 am to provide enough time to take Coaster #639 north-bound at 9:48 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:23 am. December 7 – SATURDAY
26TH ANNUAL JINGLE BELL TOY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, basically flat, 10-12 mph average pace.
Ho! Ho! Ho! Social and Express revelers all: the more riders, the merrier. Get into the holiday spirit by donating toys to needy children served by the Salvation Army. Bring an unwrapped toy to the ride start; we’ll deliver the gifts personally. Then it’s off to Coronado via the Gordy Shields Bridge & The Strand. Lunch at a pier-side cafΘ before heading home on the ferry ($5.00 with bicycle). Neither rain, snow, sleet, nor hail will deter us. After all, Santa and his reindeer donÆt cancel for inclement weather. Meet on the Harbor Drive side of the SD County Admin Building (1600 Pacific Hwy between Cedar & Ash) at 9:00 am. NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
The 1st, 2nd & 5th Sunday of each month, meet at 9 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive, across the street from the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Center, 1/2 mi E of I-5. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Ron Manherz, 858-587-0272.

December 8 – SUNDAY
SAN ELIJO – HARMONY GROVE EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at Carmel Valley Community Center (3777 Townsgate Dr.) for a scenic 44 mi ride through San Elijo, Elfin Forest and Escondido with a snack stop in San Elijo in route. Rain cancels. If weather is questionable, call ride leader on morning of ride. Leader: Neil Brooks, 858-452-3905, .

December 12 – THURSDAY
COAST RIDE, SWAMIÆS MEDITATION GARDEN û
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Join me for a quiet visit to SwamiÆs Meditation Garden at Self-Realization Fellowship as we cycle thru Encinitas. This relatively flat 25 mi ride starts at 10:30 am track-side at the Oceanside Transit Center and ends at the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station at around 2 pm. Most participants will drive to the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (free parking) arriving at about 9:30 am to provide enough time to take Coaster #639 north-bound at 9:48 am which arrives at the Oceanside Transit Center at 10:23 am. December 14 – SATURDAY
EASY TOUR OF UC SAN DIEGO STUART ART COLLECTION
Difficulty Rating: up to 13 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Meet at 9:30 am at Parking Lot P782 for a 2 1/2 hour cruise around the UC San Diego campus stopping at various outdoor site-specific Stuart Collection art works. Free weekend parking is available only in lot P782 located on the east side of the campus off Athena Circle immediately south of Athena Way (adjacent to Regents Road and Eastgate Mall). December 15 – SUNDAY
MISSION BAY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
On the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month, join us for the Sunday Ride starting from Mission Bay. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitor Center. December 15 – SUNDAY
DEL MAR TO SORRENTO MESA EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:45 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center (3777 Townsgate Dr, San Diego, CA 92130). Expect a ~ 40 mi loop with rolling hills to Del Mar Mesa then a zag through Mira Mesa, Carroll Canyon and Sorrento Valley. Come prepared with mandatory helmet, water and snacks. Rain cancels. MISSION BAY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.

December 22 – SUNDAY
LAKE MURRAY / HARBISON CYN LOOP JR EXPRESS
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, steep grade(s), 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am in the upper parking lot at Lake Murray, via the Kiowa Dr. entrance, for this 40 mi ride with 2,800′ of ascents and some steep grades that will take us along Singing Hills Country Club, thru Harbison Cyn, along Olde Hwy 80, and thru El Cajon before returning to Lake Murray.
