Bicycle Section of the Sierra Club Ride Calendar

This is a partial listing of our outings. The complete list along with our trips and social events is available to all members. See Membership Form. All outings listed are free of charge and open to public participation unless otherwise noted. If weather is questionable, contact the leader.

REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDES: Helmet, water, spare tube, pump and patch kit.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

April 23 – SUNDAY
MISSION BAY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
On the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month, join us for the Sunday Ride starting from Mission Bay. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitor Center. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Lynn Reaser, 619-255-6819.

April 23 – SUNDAY
ANNUAL GORDY SHIELDS MEMORIAL RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Join us to honor and celebrate the life of Gordy Shields who worked endlessly on behalf of the Bayshore Bikeway and cycling advocacy in our community. Ride with San Diego County Bicycle Coalition riders (joint ride with SDBC, SD Cyclo-Vets, and other interested cyclists). Meet at 8:15 am at Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Avenue near the Gordy Shields bridge in National City and be ready to roll at 8:30 am. The route is about 35 fairly-flat miles at a social pace out around the Bayshore Bikeway to Coronado and back. Leader: Ellen Scott, 619-405-4819.

April 30 – SUNDAY
NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
The 1st, 2nd & 5th Sunday of each month, meet at 9 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive, across the street from the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Center, 1/2 mi E of I-5. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Ron Manherz, 858-587-0272.

April 30 – SUNDAY
CORONADO JR. EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, basically flat, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am in the De Anza Cove parking lot of Mission Bay Park for a 41 mi ride to Coronado island. We’ll make a brief stop at Chicano Park which was recently named a National Historic Landmark for its murals, then continue onto the Bayshore Bikeway and Silver Strand. Bring $4.75 cash or payment card for ferry ride back to the mainland. Rain cancels. If weather is questionable, call ride leader. Leader: Dawn Nowlin, 858-254-8171.

NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE

MISSION BAY EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park for an approx 40 mi ride to include Mt. Soledad and Cabrillo National Monument. Bring your National Park Pass if you have one. Optional loop to the tide pools at Cabrillo. Refreshment stop in Point Loma. Leader: Kathy Askin, 619-849-9865.

CARMEL VALLEY-RANCHO SANTA FE-CARLSBAD EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at the Carmel Valley Park and Ride lot at 12791 Sorrento Valley Road, San Diego, CA 92121; located just west of I-5 at the intersection of Carmel Valley Rd and Sorrento Valley Rd for a scenic 44 mi ride through Rancho Santa Fe and Carlsbad. There will be rolling hills and a Coastal return with snack stop at Java Depot. Leader: Myles Pomeroy, 858-565-7262, Mobile: 619-246-1893.

RANUNCULUS RAMBLE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, moderate hills, 10-12 mph average pace.

May 28 – SUNDAY
COMMUNITY EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at the Carmel Valley Park and Ride under the 5/56 freeway interchange. We’ll head inland to explore neighborhood communities of Carmel Valley, Sabre Springs, Poway and more along the 56 bike path. Our destination will be the Rancho Bernardo winery for this ~45 mi ride of moderate hills and a peppy pace. Bring plenty of water in case of heat since we will not divert to a coastal route because of holiday visitors. Unlikely chance of rain cancels. Leader: Dawn Nowlin, 858-254-8171.

May 29 – MONDAY
MEMORIAL DAY HUFF N PUFF N PIG OUT
Difficulty Rating: 14 to 20 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Celebrate Memorial day with a short ride, then cool off in Marty’s pool and pig out with a BBQ. Bring your bathing suit, towel, something to grill, your own drinks and a side dish or dessert to share. Just want to pig out, come at 12:30 pm.
