Bicycle Section of the Sierra Club Ride Calendar

This is a partial listing of our outings. The complete list along with our trips and social events is available to all members. See Membership Form. All outings listed are free of charge and open to public participation unless otherwise noted. If weather is questionable, contact the leader.

REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDES: Helmet, water, spare tube, pump and patch kit.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

MISSION BAY EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay Park for a 40 mi ride north, then inland as conditions permit. Rain cancels. Leader: David Johnson, 858-483-5877.

March 26 – SUNDAY
TIJUANA ESTUARY LOOP
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, basically flat, 10-12 mph average pace.
From downtown San Diego, let’s head to Coronado via Gordy Shields Bridge and The Strand, visiting Tijuana Estuary Nature Preserve en route. We’ll also trace the Bayshore Bike Path through the wetlands and past the salt flats. Expect 28 easy miles. Snack at a pier-side cafΘ in Imperial Beach. Head home at your leisure via the Coronado ferry ($4.75 with bike). Meet at 9:00 am on North Harbor Drive in front of the San Diego County Administration Building (1600 Pacific Highway between Ash & Cedar). Free Sunday parking on North Harbor Drive. NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
The 1st, 2nd & 5th Sunday of each month, meet at 9 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive, across the street from the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Center, 1/2 mi E of I-5. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Neil Brooks, 858-452-3905.

ROUTE 56 EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, rolling hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at NE corner of Linda Vista Rd / Via Las Cumbres (parking available in SD County Office of Educ. prkg lot and on Via Las Cumbres south of Linda Vista Rd) for a 44 mi ride north past SR56 to Carmel Valley Rd. and back along the coast. Snack stop. After the ride, help Myles celebrate his 70th birthday with cake and ice cream. Rain cancels. If weather is threatening, call ride leader on morning of ride. April 13 – THURSDAY
CARLSBAD INLAND RIDE TO CRAFTSMANSHIP MUSEUM
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
This ride involves rolling hills as we bike east on Cannon Rd and Faraday Ave to the Craftsmanship Museum. The ride meets at the Carlsbad Poinsettia Amtrak train station at 10:30 am. Most participants will take the #639 Coaster north from the Sorrento Valley station which departs at 10:09 am (plan to arrive by 9:50 am). Bring money for lunch and the Coaster fare (senior, $2.50 one way, others $5.00). Bring snacks; food is not available at the museum. From the museum we bike west to the coast to the area of the Poinsettia station where we will break for snacks or lunch. We will then bike along the coast to the Sorrento Valley station parking area for a total of 32 mi. Some may choose to sign-out early to take the southbound Coaster #688 scheduled at 2:10 pm from the Poinsettia station. Leader: Allen Ramrus, 858-245-1643.

On the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month, join us for the Sunday Ride starting from Mission Bay. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitor Center. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Marty Hambright, 858-587-0272.

April 23 – SUNDAY
ANNUAL GORDY SHIELDS MEMORIAL RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills, 10-12 mph average pace.
Join us to honor and celebrate the life of Gordy Shields who worked endlessly on behalf of the Bayshore Bikeway and cycling advocacy in our community. Ride with San Diego County Bicycle Coalition riders (joint ride with SDBC, SD Cyclo-Vets, and other interested cyclists). Meet at 8:15 am at Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Avenue near the Gordy Shields bridge in National City and be ready to roll at 8:30 am. The route is about 35 fairly-flat miles at a social pace out around the Bayshore Bikeway to Coronado and back. Leader: Ellen Scott, 619-405-4819.

April 30 – SUNDAY
CORONADO JR. EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, basically flat, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am in the De Anza Cove parking lot of Mission Bay Park for a 41 mi ride to Coronado island. We’ll make a brief stop at Chicano Park which was recently named a National Historic Landmark for its murals, then continue onto the Bayshore Bikeway and Silver Strand. Bring $4.75 cash or payment card for ferry ride back to the mainland. Rain cancels. If weather is questionable, call ride leader. Leader: Dawn Nowlin, 858-254-8171.
