Bicycle Section of the Sierra Club Ride Calendar

This is a partial listing of our outings. The complete list along with our trips and social events is available to all members. See Membership Form. All outings listed are free of charge and open to public participation unless otherwise noted. If weather is questionable, contact the leader.

REQUIRED FOR ALL RIDES: Helmet, water, spare tube, pump and patch kit.

All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

September 24 – SUNDAY
MISSION BAY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
On the 3rd and 4th Sunday of each month, join us for the Sunday Ride starting from Mission Bay. Meet at 9 am in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitor Center. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Marty Hambright, 858-587-0272.

September 24 – SUNDAY
MISSION BAY TO CABRILLO JR EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am in the De Anza Cove parking lot of Mission Bay for a 30 mi ride to the Cabrillo lighthouse. Please bring a park pass if you have one to share. Ambitious riders seeking more miles can do a Fiesta Island loop and descent to the tide pools for 35 mi. Our route will navigate to Chatsworth, visit Liberty Station Starbucks then return along Nimitz to the Ocean Beach bike path. Bring provisions, water and money. Leader: Dawn Nowlin, 858-254-8171.

NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, rolling hills.
The 1st, 2nd & 5th Sunday of each month, meet at 9 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Drive, across the street from the Del Mar Highlands Shopping Center, 1/2 mi E of I-5. Route & leaders vary each week. Come for the social pace of this ride. Leader: Ron Manherz, 858-587-0272.

October 1 – SUNDAY
CARMEL VALLEY-RANCHO SANTA FE EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at the Carmel Valley Park ‘n Ride for a 43 mi ride for this NEW ROUTE. We will go up Carmel Man Rd over to Del Mar Mesa Rd, and through Rancho Santa Fe. Snack stop at Solana Beach Coffee Company on the way back. Leader: Myles Pomeroy, 858-565-7262, Mobile: 619-246-1893.

October 8 – SUNDAY
NORTH COUNTY SUNDAY RIDE

October 28 – SATURDAY
TAMARISK GROVE LOOP RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
This ride to the Tamarisk Grove Campground departs from the Borrego Springs Resort at 9:00 am. WeÆll take Borrego Springs Road south to Yaqui Pass Road which makes a long, continuous ascent to the summit. We drop quickly after that to Tamarisk Grove campground where we will enjoy a snack in the shade. We return to the Inn on route 78 which intersects with Borrego Springs Road 9 mi east of the Campground. Bring lots of water. Use lots of sunscreen. The full ride is 31 mi long. October 29 – SUNDAY
MOUNTAIN-DESERT LOOP
Difficulty Rating: over 35 mi, steep grade(s), 12-14 mph average pace.
You must contact the leader at least 24 hours before the meet time to be included on this ride. Meet at 8:15 am at the location provided when you call the leader. The ride start location will be provided at that time. We will caravan in our cars to the ride start/end location, about 20 mi away. This ride goes up Banner Grade, along scenic Wynola Rd, over Mesa Grande, and down San Felipe Canyon to the desert. Expect about 4500′ of ascents along this 56 mi route. Bring plenty of water & $ for snack stop in Santa Ysabel. Bright colored jersey/shirt is REQUIRED. Leader: Mark Ginsburg, 858-722-1992.

October 29 – SUNDAY
COMMUNITY JR EXPRESS RIDE
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, moderate hills, 12-14 mph average pace.
Meet at 8:30 am at the Carmel Valley Community Center, 3777 Townsgate Dr. We’ll head inland to explore neighborhood communities of Carmel Valley, Sabre Springs, Poway and more along the 56 bike path for a ~35 mi loop. Bring plenty of water and some snacks. Call if there is a chance of rain; true rain cancels. Leader: Dawn Nowlin, 858-254-8171.

October 29 – SUNDAY
RIDE AROUND TOWN
Difficulty Rating: 21 to 35 mi, basically flat, 10-12 mph average pace.
Meet at 10 am at Christmas Circle in the center of the Borrego Springs for this flat ride that goes around the Borrego Springs area. Although flat, we may have some wind. We will see the metal sculptures created by artist/welder Ricardo Breceda. Many depict animals that roamed the valley floor thousands of years ago. Bring plenty of snacks and water.
